Vitamin B5: Pantothenic Acid

Vitamin B5: Pantothenic Acid

B5: Pantothenic Acid is involved in many chemical reactions that play a huge role in stress and anxiety management. It helps regulate the production of stress hormones and stress related hormones that are produced by the adrenal glands. In chronic stress, B5 deficiency is possible. This causes disordered adrenal functioning causing unhealthy reactions to stress. B5: Pantothenic Acid is required to synthesize Acetyl coenzyme A (CoA) in the body, which is used in a wide variety of chemical reactions and metabolic pathways in the body. These chemical reactions play a huge role in stress and anxiety management. In its CoA form, vitamin B5 helps release energy from sugars, starches, and fats.

Avocado is a great (the best) source for B5. Also found in cauliflower, kale, lentils, broccoli, tomato, sweet potato, sunflower seeds and whole grains. B5 is damaged during the cooking process, so you will need to eat raw foods for B5.

Other B5 facts:

-B5/CoA is critical for creation of fats in the body. Both fatty acids and cholesterol require B5 in the CoA form. We cannot love without some cholesterol. People doing CrossFit/marathon runners need more B5.

-Manufactures red blood cells

-Important for adrenal health. Helps regulate the production of stress hormones and stress related hormones that are produced by the adrenal glands.

-Needed for a healthy digestive tract. Digestion is key to health

-Reduces triglycerides in the blood for people with high cholesterol

-Lowers blood lipid levels in people with diabetes

-B5 and C together speeds up wound healing, particularly after surgery (check with doctor before surgery)

-Good for RA rheumatoid arthritis- reduces symptoms (people who have RA have low B5)
