Sun is the primary source, and the most effective way to optimize D3 is with safe sun exposure. You can do this by getting at least 30 minutes a day of sun without sunscreen to face, legs, or back, (at least 4-5x a week if not daily). You do not want to burn, so you many need to work up to 30 minutes. Sunscreen is full of carcinogens, and you will not make D3 if wearing sunscreen.
Your skin and the sun work synergistically to form the D3. The D3 forms on your skin. If you take a shower right away, your body does not have an opportunity to absorb the D3.
D3 is important to increase the amount of calcium absorbed by the small intestine, so it is important for the formation and maintenance of healthy bones, immunity, and controlling cell growth. Kids need it for development strong bones and healthy teeth. There is a correlation in D3 deficiency and breast cancer, depression, and obesity. Higher levels of D3 gives many health benefits and decreases the risk of many issues. It also effects aging/ is antiaging. Higher D3 levels show fewer aging related changes in the DNA as well as lowered inflammatory responses.
If you do not get 30 minutes of sun at LEAST 4-5 days per week, or if you live in an area with winter, you likely need to supplement. You want a D3 supplement made from lichen.
